The art competition for middle and high school students has started. There are six categories for entry: drawing, painting, collage, digital art, mixed media, sculpture and photography. There will be an exhibition and prizes will be awarded for the winners during spirit week (11—14 February 2013). The deadline for submission of art work is 18 January. There is also a section for teachers and the ICS staff to donate artworks for silent auction to be held during the prize giving event.

Hacking: Creative Learning

Ethiopia has been in the news recently with many reports about students doing amazing things with computer technology. No, it wasn't ICS but children in two rural villages (including nearby Wenchi) who were given Android tablets and no instruction. The reports on this project are many, from positive to critical. (Read the original report on the MIT Technology Review: “Given Tablets but no Teachers, Ethiopian Children Teach Themselves.”)

What is Accreditation and Why is it Important?

ICS Addis has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) since 1992. Accreditation is an important Seal of Quality that “provides an independent and external affirmation that a school meets the rigorous standards set by educational peers.”

There are numerous independent agencies that accredit thousands of schools and colleges around the world. You can read more about accreditation and the MSA at their website, http://www.middlestates.org/index.php

Afternoon Dismissals

For middle school students to remain on campus after school, they must be in a supervised activity such as an ASA, meeting with teacher or in the library. They should not be hanging around the cafeteria and if they are waiting for a ride, they should be on the benches next to the gate. Parents and students are also reminded that the campus closes at 2:15 PM every Wednesday.

Booster Club Pub Night

The ICS Booster Club is having its annual fundraiser pub night on 17 November at 8:00 PM in the gym. The entrance fee is 300ETB. Join us for "old school" music of the 60's, 70's and 80's, raffle prizes, quiz, dress ups and finger foods. The Booster Club supports the Activities and Athletics Department and student teams going abroad for sports and other activities. Parents, teachers and friends of ICS are most welcome (please accompany or sign in at gate for non-ICS parents). Tickets are available at the reception desk from today.

External Event Emergency Drill

On Tuesday 30 October, ICS held an “External Event Emergency Drill” also known as a “Safe Haven Drill”. The purpose of emergency drills is to ensure everyone on campus is prepared in the event of a real emergency.  Visitors to campus were informed prior to the drill that if they chose to stay on campus, they would be required to participate fully in the drill along with everyone else. Thank you to the parents and visitors who kindly cooperated with faculty and security personnel during the drill.
