Study Habits and General Guidelines for Homework

Parents: You should talk to your child about ongoing assignments, upcoming assessments and workload in general. Hopefully they have a homework diary and insist that you see it daily. Write down or email any concerns or problems directly to the subject teacher.

Homework will not always be required for the following day but it is recommended that students complete the work on the night it is set or at least ‘chunk’ it so as not to have to do it all in one sitting the night before it is due. If there is no homework for the evening, the time can be spent reviewing the material from the day.

Most students should be spending an average of 1 to 1.5 hours each evening on their homework from Monday to Thursday (and Sunday). In addition to this they should spend 20 to 30 minutes an evening reading.

Students: A well used Homework Diary of some sort is evidence that you are organized. Take it to every class and take responsibility for it. Record the name of the subject and copy exactly what is written on the whiteboard by the teacher at the end of each class. Record when the work is to be completed by and/or due. Enter test dates and assignment due dates. After you have done the homework, write in the time it took to complete the homework and tick it off to show it is completed. Your Homework Diary is a means of communication between school and home. Look after it and keep it for school matters only.
