From the MS Principal

I have spent a great deal of time these past three weeks visiting classrooms. It is my job to know how the middle school students are doing, and not only that—I need to know that they are learning in their classes. I now have a pretty good understanding of the happenings in their subjects. Upon entering a class that is in session, I always make sure to ask individual students one question, what are you learning? Because our teachers in the middle school are experienced middle level practitioners, they know that this age group has particular needs that are unlike elementary or high school students. Our teachers take time to learn about the wide range of learning styles and individual learning experiences in order to adapt their teaching. Teachers write the learning objectives and an agenda on the board, which are clearly visible and reviewed at the beginning of each class. This practice guides students through their learning, and they should know at any given moment where they are in relation to the expectations of that lesson.

Good study habits are also an integral part of middle school learning. At this point in their educational careers, the students should be in the habit or routine of studying. Our new study hall is a quiet place for studentsto do homework, read, and/or study. Students may work in small groups quietly. A teacher is presentto assist the students with questions about their homework or studies, and to help facilitate a functioning learning environment. Students arrive promptly at 3:30 PM. Once checked in, students must remain until 4:30 PM. Students who are referred to study hall by a teacher will have a weekly report sent home to parents/guardians. Study hall is for those students wanting to take advantage of a great place to study, and for those students who are achieving below the standard and are referred by a teacher. We have many upcoming events and anticipate a great year in middle school. Please see below regarding the next few major events.
