International Day Shared Lunch
Our school will soon be celebrating International Day on Friday 24 February. This is a fantastic event that gives our children the opportunity to share their cultural background. There are different activities that parents can become involved in, but an important activity that requires a lot of parental support is the international shared lunch. We need each family to please bring a dish of food to share on the day. This food should be related to your country or cultural background. It can be any kind of savory or sweet dish (an appetizer, a main course, a dessert, etc.) that is pre-cut and easy to serve, for about 10-12 people.
Parents with children in grades 1 through 12 should deliver their food to the cafeteria from 7:20—8:00 AM on Friday 24 February. EC/KG families should take their food to their child’s classroom before school. If you would prefer to bring your food heated from home you may take it directly to the food tent just before lunch begins. Unfortunately, we will not be able to heat up food at school.
There will be two venues for the shared lunch: EC-KG will have their lunch served in their playground area with families able to sit on the surrounding grass areas to eat (families should bring a picnic rug). Grades 1-12 will have their shared lunch served in the Elementary Soccer area. The food will be served under large shade tents arranged by the following regions; Europe, Asia-Pacific, North & South America, Africa and our host nation Ethiopia. The grass area in front of the libraries will be available for families to sit and eat (some picnic tables will be available but you might want to bring a picnic rug). *If you have children in both, EC/KG and in grades 1-12 can we kindly ask you to provide two dishes, one dish to go to each venue the so that we can make sure we have enough food. (If families have more than one child in just one section of the school, either EC/KG or grades 1-12 they only need to provide one dish for that venue).
If your child is in EC through grade 8, please notify your child’s room parent of what you will be bringing. Printed labels for your dish’s name, origin and fasting/non-fasting status will be emailed to you, or are posted on the PTA noticeboard. If you are not using a disposable container for your food, don’t forget to label your dish or plate with your child’s name and class. Also, don’t forget to bring your water bottle. The Honor Society will be selling Ambo but no other drinks will be on sale.
We also very much need parents to help out on the day. If you haven’t had the chance to volunteer at a school event so far this year, then this is a great (and easy!) opportunity to become involved. Please contact Kristen Pohl-Munro kristen_pohl(at)yahoo.com if you can spare 45 minutes on the day.
We thank you for your support of this wonderful event and for any queries regarding the lunch in EC/KG please contact room parents or class teachers and for queries for grades 1-12 please contact PTA Volunteers: Donna Greig (donnagreig(at)hotmail.com), Monday Wa-Kyendo (mondaymumina(at)yahoo.com) or Kristen Pohl-Munro (kristen_pohl(at)yahoo.com).
