Board Meeting Notes
The Board opened the new school year with an excellent first meeting and I wanted to share with the Association a few comments about our role. The Board’s major policy focus is on the intended long-term effects, and not on the administrative or programmatic means of attaining those effects. Likewise, the Board has five core responsibilities and they include:
• To create, update, and ensure implementation of the long-term strategic vision of the school,
• To facilitate the relationship between the School and the Association,
• To produce assurance of the Director’s performance,
• To ensure the school is adequately financed to accomplish its goals and objectives, and
• Maintain records
I believe that during our June Retreat we put in place goals and objectives that look at each of these. To the last point, this year’s Board has even created a new Board Secretary position to address that systemic issue and we would like to thank Anne for taking on the task. Likewise, only decisions made by the Board acting as a whole are binding upon the Director. We instruct the Director through written policies that prescribe the organizational Ends to be achieved and describe organizational situations and actions to be avoided, allowing the Director to use reasonable interpretation of these policies. We also monitor the Director’s performance through using Executive Limitations and those will be briefed to us throughout the School Year.
This year’s Board will be focusing on the far reaching, 2020/10-yr moveable goal. This is hard work and will consume a lot of our energy. Our next steps will include formalizing those ideas and discussion, and begin building a framework.
This promises to be a great year and we hope that everyone has settled back into school.
