Girls CAN: design, make, program

On Saturday, a group of girls from grades 6-12 came to the Makerspace/Robotics Lab to create things, program things and learn about technology tools. We had a special visitor, Gillian Brewin, a former parent who talked about her own work in technology and that of her daughter (ICS graduate), Danielle. It was a busy day, with lots of 3D printing, robots being built, laser cutting designs, and more. The girls all expressed a hope that we would have more such events …and we are planning to! Technology is primarily a male-dominated field and ICS is determined to do its small part to change that and give our girls the skills and opportunities to explore and learn in technology. Read more about it here. I’ve posted some photos and information from the day.

Parenting in the Digital Age

Wednesday morning, Alicia Brown (grade 9-10 counselor) and John Iglar (educational technology director) gave a presentation to parents about “Parenting in the Digital Age.” We looked at various social media in use by students, some issues affecting students regarding the use of the internet and social media, and explored some scenarios and shared some resources. There were good discussions amongst parents and sharing of issues and different strategies parents take. It was a productive and valuable informal coffee morning.

See the presentation here, with some links to resources for parents to help work your way through the issues of parenting in this digital age.
