International Schools’ Assessment Results for Grade 10

In October of 2012, ICS students in grade 10 participated in the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA), a program developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and designed specifically for international schools. The ISA assesses students in the three learning areas of mathematical literacy, reading and writing.

Message from HS Principal

Happy new year, welcome to new families and welcome back to everyone in the ICS community. The grand opening of the new "Outdoor Cafe" upfield on Tuesday was a big success. Students now enjoy spacious shaded seating areas and access to the games tables, football pitch and basketball court during lunch. Waiting in line can be avoided if students "preorder" during the morning break, by visiting the Elementary School Tukel (between the library and the outdoor amphitheater).

High School Assembly

At last week’s high school assembly, we said farewell to five students who will be leaving us this week to travel with their families to other locations.

IBDp Year One and Two Students

IBDP Year One: Students will select standard and higher level IBDP courses this semester. Parents will receive a letter explaining the process and the various factors involved in making this all-important decision. Please consult with teachers, the HS counselor, and the IBDP coordinator in order to learn about the issues involved in the decision. Teachers will be recommending levels of appropriate challenge in each course, and final decisions will be made in consultation with the IBDP coordinator, students and parents.

“What do kids do in Addis Ababa?”

Early this year, our high school counselor, Mike Anthony, offered an information session for high school parents, introducing them to the social scene of Addis Ababa outside the gates of ICS. Although our high school students have a wide range of activities in school from which to choose, they also have other choices around Addis. Families have different and equally valid perspectives on how much—or how little—their children should go out with friends, how early they must be home, where they may go and with whom.

New Mathematics and Science Teacher

Ms. Claire Moriarty will join ICS in the middle and high school in January as a mathematics and science teacher. Ms. Moriarty comes to us from a secondary school in Portland, Australia. With seven years of teaching experience in Australia and Korea, she brings bachelor's degrees in engineering, mathematics and teaching to ICS, along with ESL, elementary, mathematics and general science teaching qualifications. Ms. Moriarty will arrive in early January and will take over five middle/high school mathematics classes added this year due to increased enrollment.

IBDP Update

IBDP Year One: The selection of standard and higher level IBDP courses will be undertaken this semester. Parents will receive a letter explaining the process and the various factors involved in making this allimportant decision. Please do not hesitate to consult with teachers, the HS counselor, and the IBDP coordinator in order to be as informed as possible on the issues involved in the decision.

Interim Reports

Interim Reports are being prepared this week and will be sent to parents of middle and high school students in danger of scoring a ‘3’ (mediocre) or lower for the semester. A ‘3’ is the minimum grade for a student to receive credit for that course toward ICS graduation requirements. Students whose achievement has dropped since quarter one will also receive a report.

Students Saddle Up for CAS

On a clear Saturday at the beginning of November, four grade eleven students, Rawan Al Majed, Deborah Buzuayehu, Ejig Diriba, and Niamh Kelly-Omollo, assembled at ICS for a unique CAS opportunity: horseback riding in the hills of Sululta with Equus Ethiopia, accompanied by Ms. Halsey and Ms. Baxter.

Grade Ten IBDP Parent Night

Many thanks to the parents, teachers, and students who attended the grade ten IBDP Parent Night this week. This informative session provided an opportunity to learn more about the IBDP at ICS. Teachers were on hand to give more detailed information and to assist families in making their decisions about course selection for next year.
