IB Mock Exams

Grade 12 students will be taking their mock exams next week, 6—10 February. The purpose of the mock exams is to support student learning in the following ways:

1. To practice, and learn from, a week of intense examination that resembles the actual IB exam format.
2. To provide students, teachers, and parents feedback from formative assessments that will enable more effective preparation for the actual exams in May.

High School in February...

February is a short but full month at ICS. Next week we have several activities in the high school, with Model United Nations students traveling to Doha for their annual event, and drama students traveling to Brussels for the International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) Festival. On campus, we will see the kickoff of two popular community events: the ICS Run/Walk for Charity (scheduled for 25 February) and "Spirit" Activities for students.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports are currently being published. In the attempt to save paper, the reports will be emailed to parents and students at the beginning of next week. The reports will be in a portable document format (pdf), which can be printed with ease. If you would like to have a print out of the semester report, please inform us (hanna.kebede(at)icsaddis.edu.et) as soon as possible.

Mother Tongue Maintenance—Pilot Program to begin on Wednesday afternoons in late January

Research tells us that children learn English better when they can scaffold their learning alongside their home language. Home languages are also fundamental to a child’s identity in a new environment. Keeping up with learning and language development in the “mother tongue” or home language is important, as well, when the family returns to the country of origin.

High school students have had much to keep them involved in the final weeks of 2011. On the academic side:
• Grade 12 students have completed their Extended Essays and have begun their Internally Assessed coursework assignments and oral examinations, which will extend into March.
• Most university applications are complete, with final deadlines approaching.

IBDP Meeting for Grade Ten Parents and Students

Parents and students are invited to join us on the upcoming orientation evening on 8 December at 6:30 PM. The evening will follow the established format, with an introduction to the IBDP and the various pathways that students can pursue in grades 11 and 12. Teachers from each group will be present to answer questions and provide more detailed information about individual courses.

Interim Reports for MS and HS

Interim Reports were sent to parents of high school students in danger of scoring a ‘3’ (mediocre) or lower for the semester. A ‘3’ is the minimum grade for a student to receive credit for that course toward ICS graduation requirements.

The semester ends on Thursday 15 December, the last day of school for 2011. Reports for Semester 1 will be sent home with students in the first week we return to school, 9-13 January 2012.

Effort Grades--Visible Learning Behaviors

This year, we have joined hundreds of schools around the world in reporting academic achievement separately from student effort and behavior.
* What a student knows and can do is the basis of the achievement grade.
* The effort grade reports attendance and punctuality, attention in class, homework, and study habits.

Summer Opportunity: US Army Military Adventure Camp

The US Army Cadet Corps' Military Adventure Camp is a program for young men and women ages 12-18 that takes place in Millersburg, KY. The program provides a realistic and challenging army career exploration program, to allow teens a chance to see what going through American military training would really be like before actually enlisting, or just to provide themselves with a challenge over the summer. Parents Invited to CIS College Fair at ICS Addis

The CIS College Fair will take place in the ICS Courtyard from 2:00—4:00 PM on Wednesday 9 November. Parents are invited to attend as well.

12:30—1:30 PM - Lunch at Mr. Laney's residence for grade 12 students who are applying to one or more of the universities that are in attendance.

1:30—2:15 PM - Presentation in the MPR for all grade 11 and 12 students: The College Search: Choosing the Right College, How to Use a College Fair, and Planning for the College Process.
