Library Link

Important dates: Friday 25 May is the last day to borrow library materials. Please see our librarian, Martha Langille, should you need to borrow after this date. All materials are to be returned to the library by Friday 1 June. You will help the library staff immensely if materials are returned in a timely manner. Please note as well that it is school policy to withhold any year-end reports if library materials are not returned or paid for if lost or damaged.

IB Year 1 and 2 News

IB Year One: Grade 11 students listened to their teachers engage in lively debate on topics ranging from capital punishment, genetic engineering, to the value of history. Various students also posed probing questions and took the "hotseat" to add insightful commentary. This discussion, known as "The Theory Of Knowledge (TOK) Round Table" is an opportunity to participate in a focused discussion on a topic relevant to Theory of Knowledge.

Message from MS Principal

Dear Middle School Parents,

ICS PTA Welcome Guide 4th Edition

The ICS Welcome to Addis Guide is an initiative of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the International Community School (ICS) in Addis Ababa. It is downloadable from the ICS website for anybody with internet access and quite a few expat families used it to get acquainted with this city. It is up for revision. I am sure many of you have found out about great places and we all can benefit from an updated ICS Welcome to Addis Guide.

April 2012 Board Election Results

Board elections were held on April 19th and all three candidates were elected. ICS welcomes our elected members Anne Bouma (incumbent), Omar Carrera (incumbent) and William Graham to the ICS Board of Governors. Thank you to all association members who voted for the candidates.

Collaborating. . .or cheating?

If we accept the notion that “effective collaboration is a 21st century skill,” then our teaching and learning should focus on the careful development of social learning skills. Why “careful”?

Grade 8 Stepping Up

The Grade 8 Stepping Up Ceremony & Dessert Reception will be held at ICS on Friday 25 May at 7:00 PM. All family members of current grade 8 students are welcome to attend this formal ceremony marking the “stepping up” into high school. Invitations will be sent via email on Friday 11 May. Please RSVP using only one email for each family. Be sure to include your grade 8 child when you RSVP. We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with our grade 8 students and their families!

Grade 5 Stepping Up Ceremony

The Grade 5 Stepping Up Ceremony and Potluck Dinner will be held at the ICS Gym on Thursday 7 June starting at 5:30 PM. As you all know, a potluck is a shared dinner where each family is asked to contribute a dish. We have divided the courses by last name to hopefully insure an even distribution. Please bring enough to feed 10-12.

Recognition for Outstanding Performance

Last year we instituted a tradition of officially recognizing service to the ICS community for our employees. For the first time in anyone’s memory, all of our staff gathered at the end of the year for a special ceremony to honor staff members who had served ICS for five, ten, fifteen or more years. We also recognized colleagues who had completed new degrees, those retiring, and those leaving for other countries and schools.
