Middle School Student-Led Conferences

We are proud to announce that this year all students in middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8) will participate in student-led conferences at the end of the third quarter. Below we have included information about studentled conferences and the benefits for both students and parents.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports are currently being published. In the attempt to save paper, the reports will be emailed to parents and students at the beginning of next week. The reports will be in a portable document format (pdf), which can be printed with ease. If you would like to have a print out of the semester report, please inform us (hanna.kebede(at)icsaddis.edu.et) as soon as possible.

Interim Reports for MS and HS

Interim Reports were sent to parents of high school students in danger of scoring a ‘3’ (mediocre) or lower for the semester. A ‘3’ is the minimum grade for a student to receive credit for that course toward ICS graduation requirements.

The semester ends on Thursday 15 December, the last day of school for 2011. Reports for Semester 1 will be sent home with students in the first week we return to school, 9-13 January 2012.

Effort Grades--Visible Learning Behaviors

This year, we have joined hundreds of schools around the world in reporting academic achievement separately from student effort and behavior.
* What a student knows and can do is the basis of the achievement grade.
* The effort grade reports attendance and punctuality, attention in class, homework, and study habits.

Scholastic Book Club Orders

We are very pleased to offer our first Scholastic Book Club of the school year! The book club provides you with the opportunity to purchase books for your children although participation is purely voluntary. It also provides many new books for our classroom libraries. The Scholastic Book Club provides a wide range of reading materials for students PK-Grade 8 .

Grades at ICS

This year both the middle and high schools will complete the transition to an improved and more accurate way to report student learning to parents. Our 1st quarter reports, which you may collect at Parent-Teacher Conferences on 27 or 28 October, will reflect:

ICS Beliefs About Assessment and Grades: This document explains the key findings of educational research on motivation, learning, and assessment that inform our practices. It also includes information on achievement grades.

Parent Volunteers Needed to Host Grade Level Potlucks

A tradition at ICS at the beginning of each school year are grade level potluck dinners. A potluck is a dinner where each guest contributes a dish to share (e.g., main course, salad, vegetable, appetizer, drinks or dessert). This lessens the burden on the host. Please note, this is a special evening for parents only. We are currently looking for someone from each middle school grade to host the dinner in their home. As the host, you agree to open your home to the parents of your child’s classmates. The school will provide tables, chairs, tents, plates, cutlery, napkins, coffee and tea.

Middle School – What Can I Do After School?

Good study habits are an integral part of middle school learning. At this point in their educational careers, the students should be in the habit of studying. ICS offers many after school venues for students to study after school. Teachers are available to meet students after school to assist with any lingering questions or difficult concepts. Each teacher has an after school schedule posted on their classroom doors indicating their times available for students. The library is also open for students after school up until 5:00 PM.
