Grade 9 Class Interested in Raising Awareness of Child Labor

In the 9th grade Modern World History class we have been exploring the issue of child labor in both historical and modern times. We have learned that over 215 million children work in today’s world and 12 million are trafficked each year, thus preventing them from receiving a proper education. We are currently working on the question, how can we help eradicate child labor? Being a class of 45 students in Ethiopia, we cannot do much about the child labor that is going on around the world, but we can make a difference in the community around us.

Mother Tongue Maintenance Pilot Program

Research tells us that children learn English better when they can scaffold their learning alongside their home language. Home languages are also fundamental to a child’s identity in a new environment.

Victory at Adwa Day - No School for Students on Friday, 2 March

The Victory at Adwa Day government holiday was mistakenly placed on the ICS calendar on Monday 5 March. The holiday is on Friday 2 March and therefore we are adjusting the ICS calendar to reflect this.

Early Dismissal on Thursday 19 January

All students will be dismissed at 12:00 PM on Thursday 19 January, due to the Timkat processions around Addis. This will allow all families to get home before the processions block the roads. The cafeteria will provide lunch for kindergarten students only; no lunch or after school activities for grades 1-12. Friday 20 January is the Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany) holiday, with no school for all students.

Tuition and Fee Invoices for Second Semester

The tuition and fee bills for second semester have been sent home with students on 10 January 2012, and by email for those who requested electronic bills. Please check with your youngest child for a hard copy. Another copy can be provided by the Business Office if needed. The payment for the entire second semester tuition and fees must be paid by 27 January 2012. If you already have paid the bill, please provide proof of payment so that we can match your payment to your bill.

Speakers Needed for International Career Panels on International Day

Friday 24 February is International Day at ICS and we are taking this opportunity to build on the global focus of this event by hosting international career sessions for students. We are looking for panel speakers from the ICS parent community and the wider Addis community, to share their expertise in their international/global careers. This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to learn, first hand, about international careers that interest them. Each profession will have a panel of speakers to provide a breadth of experience in each career.

International Day Shared Lunch

For International Day on 24 February the PTA will be calling on parents to help provide an internationally flavored shared lunch (also known as a ‘potluck’ lunch) for our school community! We will be asking families to send/bring national dishes of savory or sweet food, suitable for students to easily eat at lunchtime. We will also be asking for volunteers on the day to help receive the food and help in the food tents – if you have been waiting for a chance to get involved this requires only a couple of hours of your time so mark it on your calendar!

International Day: Flag Parade and Performances

The Flag Parade Committee needs your help. A letter will be going home today with students about the flag parade. The letter asks students to choose the country for which they wish to walk during the parade. Alternative options include "world citizens" who choose to walk with the ICS, UN, EU, or AU flags. It is very important that every student returns the completed form by Tuesday 13 December. We will be ordering new flags for each country and want to be sure that your nationality is included in this wonderful ICS event!
