Hannah Thein

English as an Another Language

Hello, my name is Hannah Thein, and my husband Niclas and I are so happy to be returning to ICS this year.

Last year at ICS I taught first grade, and this year I will be joining the Student Support Team as an EAL teacher, working closely with Kerry Girod, my partner EAL teacher.

I have been a professional educator for 26 years: 20 years of experience as a classroom and EAL teacher, and over five years as a principal, EAL coordinator, and consultant. I have endorsements in elementary education, English as Another Language and Administration. I have a Master's Degree in EAL.

For several years I was a classroom teacher in grades K-8 in Vermont before teaching at the Americano Colegio de Quito, in Ecuador, and at the American International School in Vienna, Austria. AT AIS Vienna, I was in charge of resturcturing their EAL program. Over the years, besides developing and implementing individualized programs for EAL students, I also provided professional development to staff in EAL, including second language acquistion, ways in which teachers can help EAL students access the curriculum, and vocabulary development.

Niclas and I have a large extended family in Vermont, USA. In our personal lives, we enjoy biking and hiking, traveling, photography, computers (blogging, mapping, research, etc.) and socializing. We very much look forward to working with the all the members of our ICS community and continuing our adventures exploring Ethiopia and other nearby countries.
