Academic Facilities

 Academic facilities at ICS include 42 classrooms, three computer labs and six science labs, as well as separate elementary and secondary school libraries, an outdoor auditorium and an infirmary. The secondary school classroom block was completed in 2006 and provides purpose-built classrooms for most of the secondary school classes, as well as lockers for all students and a school store. Athletic Facilities

Students, staff and families enjoy use of excellent sports and play facilities at ICS Addis. With beautiful weather almost all year, hundreds of community members use our facilities on a daily basis (including the weekends). Our all-weather 300-meter track is the only one in Ethiopia—in addition to all of our student athletes and many parents who walk or run for fitness, many of Ethiopia’s famous runners use our track early in the mornings for training. Two 80-meter soccer pitches (one doubles for softball/baseball), four clay tennis courts and an outdoor hardcourt for basketball and volleyball are used by everyone most of the year. Indoors, our gymnasium allows a wide variety of sports, and a fitness center is available for student and staff use. Elementary students also enjoy multiple play areas, with small soccer pitches and appropriate play structures. These elementary play areas are open on the weekends with parent supervision.

New Facilities
ICS Addis has a campus master plan that guides new building projects and renovations. The Board of Governors has approved two phases of construction, and we anticipate beginning construction on phase one in 2011. Phase one includes a new classroom block with 26 classrooms. This building will be built at the bottom of the campus and can be constructed without disrupting the current educational program very much. The second building planned for phase one is a new Performing Arts Center (PAC), which will be built where our current main admin/classroom building is. ICS Addis is pursuing LEED certification for the two buildings in phase one from the US Green Building Council. This is the first “certified green” building project in Ethiopia. A national architect is working on construction documents for both projects; an international firm is also involved in the design stage of the PAC. Temporary buildings and classrooms will help ICS cope with current and enrollment and limited growth. Four temporary classrooms were erected in the spring of 2011.

Phase two includes a new pool facility to be built at the site of the current early childhood center, and gym/cafeteria renovations to support our growing programs. Both of these facilities are in the design stage with an international architect.

Future plans also include new elementary classroom blocks and playgrounds. Preliminary designs for these buildings are under development. When completed, the new campus will easily support a holistic learning environment for 1200+ students.

A Green Campus
Visitors to the ICS Addis campus always comment on our open green spaces, and all the beautiful trees and flowers. Our campus is an oasis of nature in a busy city. Our middle school science students have photographed and learned about the dozens of flowering trees, bushes and plants found on our campus—many of which are indigenous to Ethiopia.
