Andre De Koker
Grade 5

In 1997 my wife and I embarked on a journey that has eventually brought us to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the ICS community. Back then we moved from South Africa to Central Asia to begin work with local NGO’s. It was in this interesting part of the world that I had an opportunity to take my first steps into the realm of education. I began teaching at a small international school in Turkmenistan, while at the same time studying for my Masters in Elementary Education through The College of New Jersey, USA. Since then I have taught in various schools in Central Asia and China. ICS marks my return to Africa and I am thrilled.
This year, my second in Ethiopia, I look forward to being part of the ever changing and evolving process taking place at ICS. I would like to work closely with my grade level colleagues to develop an exciting program, incorporating 21st century learning practices focused on student learning and exposure to real world issues. I believe our lives have purpose and meaning and I endeavor to encourage my students to discover theirs as we interact together in our class.
Outside the classroom, you will usually find me with a cup of coffee and a good non-fiction book.
