The Talking Head
International Day at ICS Addis
International Day has been an ICS tradition for many decades…even before our name changed from the American Community School! The spirit of International Day is to celebrate the idea that people from many languages, cultures and education backgrounds can come together to create something wonderful. We create that something wonderful every day at ICS in our classrooms, on our playgrounds and sports teams, and in our conversations with each other. But, creating something wonderful takes hard work. It takes compromise, it requires dialogue (which means listening, not just talking) and sometimes it calls for making and accepting hard decisions. But, on occasion it also means we can step back, take a deep breath, and celebrate something special together.
Today in Ethiopia, many people are anxious or worried, for good reason. The ICS International Day is a great way to answer the fear and anger that is growing in some parts of the country. ICS is a model for making diversity work. We can all be proud of our national, cultural and religious heritages, and we can allow others to be proud too. International Day says to all of us—and importantly, to our children— that laughter, food, song and dance, and celebration can build community and understanding.
If you need more details or have concerns about International Day that I haven’t addressed in this brief note, more details are included in this issue of the Yezare Samint.
I hope that you will join us on Saturday to celebrate with our students and our community.
