The Middle/High School Library is proud to introduce the Newbery Reading Challenge!
What is the challenge?
The Newbery Reading Challenge is a new reading promotion program for all middle school students. The challenge is to read six Newbery Medal or Honor winning books between October 2016 and January 2017. The list of all Newbery books in the ICS Libraries for students to choose from, including summaries, Lexile ranges, and genres can be found on the Newbery Books resource list in our Destiny library catalog:

Why Newbery books?
The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. The Newbery Medal and Honor award books celebrate writing for children, in fact it is the first children’s book award in the world. Newbery medals have been awarded every year since 1922, making Newbery books modern classics that provide a window into the years they are written. Newbery books are written by a diverse, multi-cultural pool of authors in many different genres and formats which allow students to explore new writers, stories and ideas. By reading Newbery books, children all over the world engage in shared reading experiences that connect them to the rich, compelling world of children’s literature.
How does the challenge work?
Students will share the Newbery books that they choose to read in a variety of interactive ways, building an engaged reading culture focused on conversations and book-talks with classmates, teachers and Ms. T-D via reviews and recommendations, class projects, literature circle discussions, and individual conferences.
All students in grade 6 will participate through their in-class readings and projects, as well as reading three Newbery books independently. Ms. Paproski and Ms. Flo will coordinate this whole grade level reading event with Ms. T-D. Students in grades 7 and 8 can choose to participate with support from Ms. Franks, Ms. King and Ms. T-D.
In January the new Newbery award books will be announced. The MS/HS Library will host a Newbery party where students will receive customized Newbery Reading Challenge award certificates including an official Newbery medal sticker for each book they read, and they will also have their names in a drawing to win brand new hardcover copies of the new Newbery books.
