Important Information for the upcoming MAP testing

All students in grades 9 and 10 will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests this month in English and Mathematics. The MAP assessment is a computerized adaptive assessment that measures your child’s progress in Reading and Math. The level of difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. This enables the assessment to identify the full spectrum of a student’s strengths and weaknesses. At ICS we use the MAP assessment for a variety of purposes, such as informing instruction in the classroom, monitoring student growth, and selecting courses to provide appropriate academic challenges. There is no need for students to prepare for the tests and no homework or other preparation involved.

Farewell to our seniors

On Wednesday we celebrated our grade 12 student successes with our annual Senior Awards Ceremony. For a list of Award winners, please click HERE. Friday 22 April is the last day for seniors, as they begin their study leave before their exams begin on 2 May. The parents of grade 12 students have organized a farewell picnic this Sunday to help celebrate with the students. Many thanks for taking this on, parents. We wish our students the best of luck!

ICS Merit Scholarship 2016-17 Winners

We have concluded our ICS Merit Scholarship selection process and are pleased to have had the opportunity to receive so many applications from several highly qualified candidates. We will announce the winners next week. Next week, we also host our annual Senior Scholarship Student Dinner. This event celebrates their achievements over the past four years at ICS and provides an opportunity for us to welcome the new scholarship students to ICS.

Alcohol Awareness Month

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and this year's theme is "Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference in Teen Alcohol Use."

Seven out of 10 parents of 10 to 15 year olds say they are "very comfortable" talking with their kids about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. However, only 38 percent of youth in the same families say they are "very comfortable" talking with their parents about these issues.

The following are some discussion starters from ParentFurther, our website for families, to help you get these important conversations started.

Discussion Starters with Your Kids

Even though the main goal of this discussion is preventing youth from using alcohol, it's helpful for parenting adults and youth to share their experiences and perspectives. That will make it more comfortable for young people to talk about it, too.

  • What are some of your early memories of seeing others use alcohol? What do you remember? How did you react at the time?
  • Where have our family's attitudes about alcohol come from? Are those influences positive or negative, in your view?
  • Think about your best friends. Do they use alcohol? When, where, and how much? In what ways does what your friends do influence what you do?

Discussion Starters with Other Parenting Adults

These parenting adults may include your spouse or partner, extended family members, friends who are parents, or a parent group or class.

  • What are your biggest concerns regarding alcohol use?
  • What's hardest in addressing youth alcohol use in our community? What has worked?
  • What are great resources in our community to help with keeping kids substance free? What groups or places in the community are problematic or make it harder?
