High School Principal, David Redmond

Our fourth week is well under way and students are settling in to routines. Thank you for your cooperation in getting us off to a positive start to the school year! Below please find important information on current and upcoming events in the high school.

ICS High School Student/Parent Handbook

Our High School Student/Parent Handbook is available on the ICS website and is distributed to all of our students. The Handbook contains important information regarding our policies and procedures, including assessment, attendance, discipline, expectations, as well as the names and emails of all of our staff. Please refer to the Handbook and/or contact me if you have any concerns or questions at all.

Assessment Calendars

Now that students have their devices and are connected to our school email accounts, they can access their Assessment Calendars, organized by grade level, on zimbra. Please know that you can check on upcoming homework, essays, tests and other assignments by viewing the assessment calendar with your child. Students should not have more than two assessments and one long-term project due on any one school day. We ask teachers to respect this rule and we encourage students to advocate for themselves in order to provide a Balance in the High School Workload.

Communicating about your Child’s Academic Progress

In the high school, we regularly report on student learning through frequent communication between teachers and students and parents. At the mid-point of each semester, we send a Progress Report (this year, 30 September for the first semester, 24 March for the second semester). At the end of each semester, we send home a Semester Report, which is a final grade. These reports are sent to all students and parents.

In addition to the above, at the beginning of each semester teachers will send an email to the parents of students who are receiving or who are likely to receive a grade of “3” or below. We do this to inform students and parents of immediate or potential academic concerns at the outset of the term so that steps can be taken to intervene with measures for improvement. If you receive an email from a High School teacher about your child’s progress, please feel free to contact the teacher to inquire about means of supporting his or her learning while there is plenty of time remaining to improve performance. This email will be sent before 9 September 2016.

We also arrange meetings between students, parents, and teachers on a regular basis. This year, we are shifting to a student-centered meeting, wherein the students will present their academic goals to their parents and teachers. This is an ideal time to meet with your child and to listen to him talk about his or her progress, aspirations, strategies and plans. The meetings are required for all ICS high school students and we encourage all parents to attend. An online appointment calendar will be made available at a later date.

Math Tutoring

Our high school is pleased to offer Math tutoring after school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:30 – 4:30 pm with our Mathematics Teaching Assistant, Ms. Azeb Estiphanos. In order to arrange tutoring sessions, either for a group or for an individual child, please contact your child’s Math teacher. We urge parents to take advantage of this opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom, whether for an extra challenge or for catching up on new or difficult concepts.

College Visits

On Wednesday, 7 September at 2:00 PM we will welcome Admissions representatives from the following U.S. universities: Columbia University, Cornel University, Dartmouth College, and Princeton University. Please plan to come to the sessions to be held in the Upper Commons if you are interested in learning more about opportunities at these institutions.

Grade 12 University Parent Night

Mark your calendars!  Thursday, September 15 is our Grade 12 Parent University Night. The presentation will start at 6:00 p.m. in the Upper Commons and will focus on information regarding the United States and Canada only. Mr. Barekman, ICS Grade 11/12 College Counselor, will work with students and their parents individually for other countries, as North America seems to be by far the dominant destination for this class based on my initial survey. If there are smaller sub-groups such as the United Kingdom, Europe, etc. where a handful of students are applying Mr. Barekman will let you know when we can have those meetings. For more information please contact Mr. Barekman.

IB Diploma Extended Essay Due Date

Grade 12 candidates have a significant deadline tomorrow Friday, 2 September. All full diploma candidates must submit a detailed outline of and works cited page for their extended essay (EE). Students are well aware of this deadline. We would like to ask parents to offer encouragement and support as their child continues to work on this crucial piece of independent research and writing.

Grade 9 Parent Night

Parents of students in grade 9 are invited to grade 9 Parent Night on Tuesday, 20 September at 7:00 PM. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the high school and connect with other grade 9 parents. We encourage all parents to attend – to learn more about our programs, to meet us, and to meet one another. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Alicia Brown, grade 9/10 counselor.

Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD)

This year, we have once again engaged the services of Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD). FCD is a non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention education for schools worldwide. ICS teachers and FCD Prevention Specialists have planned three days of workshops and a special information session for parents and students on Thursday 29 September at 7:00 PM. The FCD visit offers a perfect opportunity to discuss addiction prevention, alcohol and drug-related issues with your children. We are happy to work in partnership with parents to educate our students on this crucial issue. Please come out to this evening event with your child as we take these measures for the health of our community. FCD is here at school until Friday, 30 September. Parents are invited to contact the High School or the Middle School Office if you would like to arrange to visit with the team.

Please continue to read the weekly Yezare Samint for important information regarding our high school program, and please don’t hesitate to contact me at for any matter pertaining to your child’s education.
