Elementary School Back to School Night

It is an exciting time of the year! Welcome to all new families and new staff members!  Welcome back to our returning families as well!

I want to invite everyone to the ICS Elementary Back to School Night which will be held on 18 August at 5:30 PM in the gymnasium.

We’ll start the night with parents ‘mix and mingle’ in the gym.  We’ll have some snacks, wine and cheese, this is not a full meal but simply a chance to meet new parents and reconnect with old friends.

We highly recommend keeping the kids at home. We do however understand that some families have not yet arranged for household staff (nannies/babysitters/drivers). We’ll provide a limited service of babysitting.

Details for the back to school night are as follows:

  • 5:30 - 6:00 PM: Mix and mingle in the gym (please, No children in the gym if possible)
  • 6:00 - 6:10 PM: Short welcome from the Head of School, Mr. Laney

If you’re unable to attend the ‘mix and mingle’ then we want you to try your vest best to come to your child's teachers Back to School Night presentation. The purpose is so that you can meet your child's teacher, get to know the expectations for the classroom, homework procedures, get an overview of the units of inquiry, and learn the best ways to communicate with the teacher and teaching assistant.  You will also have a chance to meet your child's specials teachers in the lower commons, cafeteria.  Please make some time to drop by the lower commons to meet and hear about the amazing specials programs here at ICS and what your children will be doing this year.

You have three opportunities to hear your child's teacher's presentation:

  • 6:10 - 6:30 PM, Rotation 1
  • 6:35 - 7:05 PM, Rotation 2
  • 7:10 - 7:30 PM, Rotation 3

Running alongside your child’s teacher presentation will be two other sessions that we highly encourage you to attend.  These sessions run concurrent with Rotation 2 and 3. NO SESSIONS during Rotation 1.

Concurrent Session "Supporting Literacy at Home and School." In the ICS Elementary Library we will provide information to you about how important it is to support literacy.

Concurrent Session "IB and the Primary Years Program (PYP)." This session will give you an overview of what it means to be a family at a PYP school.

All EARLY CHILDHOOD families will report to the Middle School Library for the Early Childhood Rotations.

Babysitting - Child Care

The events off the night are designed for adults.  We encourage parents NOT to bring children. However, we do not want the lack of child care to keep you from coming.  Some High School students will be doing babysitting for students as young as EC-3 up to Grade 3.  It is free but we do ask for a donation to support our Action/Service projects at the High School.  Bring your children to the elementary office and we will guide you to the location of the baby sitting.  If you have to bring your 4th or 5th grade student we will have a few TAs watching the elementary playground behind the 4th grade classrooms.  Otherwise students are not allowed on campus unsupervised, please.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in touch with the elementary office.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you next Thursday!

Meskel Play, 23 September 2016: Each year our grade 3 students at ICS perform a play to celebrate the Ethiopian Holiday called Meskel. The story of Meskel is about Empress Eleni and her quest to find the true cross of Jesus Christ. All interested grade 3 students are invited to participate in the play. Letters detailing rehearsal times as well as information on how to sign up will be sent home with all grade 3 students. If you have any questions please contact our ES music teacher Ms. Janine Plunkett.
