Band

The ICS Band program begins in fifth grade. Students are given a chance to choose one instrument for the school year: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion. Students work on embouchure, fingerings, playing with good tone quality and intonation as well as music literacy. They perform in sectionals throughout the year at the Elementary Friday Morning Assemblies.

In Middle School, students continue to develop their skills on their choice instruments but can switch from trumpet to baritone horn, French horn and tuba. Students in middle school perform three times a year as a middle school band, but have opportunities to work in smaller ensembles to perform more frequently throughout the year.

In High School, the pieces that are played are at a higher level. Students are challenged to learn more music theory and history in conjunction with pieces performed. They are also given opportunities to strengthen their music reading skills through sight-reading. Music recitals occur once a year currently and students are welcome to prepare music and perform at these functions.

IB Music is also a course that is provided for students who want to dive further into music. Students in choir or band can choose to study IB Music through the two performance options: solo or group. IB music encourages students to listen critically and analyze music using accurate music terminology. Students taking IB Music will listen to a wide range of music from the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern eras and world music.
