Important Notices for All Parents


No School Monday 12 December, in observance of Maulid.  Have a great long weekend.

Responsible Use Policy for ICS Guest Network

Due to the recent restrictions on social media by the Ethiopian Government, we are requiring all parents, staff and students to sign a "responsible use" document.  

The responsible use document states that:

  • I agree to not post, share, download or promote any website, page, file or information that may be in violation of the laws of Ethiopia.
  • I agree to not use any VPN or proxy service/anonymizer on any device on the ICS network which is not authorized by the ICS administration and/or IT Department.
  • I understand that failure to follow these terms will result in consequences such as loss of internet access and/or disciplinary action.
  • I have read and agree to follow the Responsible Use Policy

Starting on Tuesday 13 December, anyone signing onto the ICS Guest network will need to agree to the above terms, before they can be connected.  We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause, but ICS needs to comply with Ethiopian law.

New Parent Community Link

After speaking with PTA volunteers and officers, the Booster Club, Board members and other parents, the administration is creating the Parent Community Link (PCL). The PCL will match parents who want to get involved with a variety of opportunities throughout the year. The Parent Community Link will be a great resource for the PTA, Booster Club and other groups in the years to come.

Decline in Community Involvement

We have seen a decline in parent involvement. There is a shortage of volunteers supporting community events from International Day to the PTA. Our community events rely on parent involvement to succeed.  More volunteers are needed to plan and support our events, and to run the PTA.

The PCL will be our tool for supporting community events and activities such as the monthly Community Coffee mornings, the Farmers Markets, the Spring Festival and other events by linking parents with involvement opportunities.

The purpose for the Parent Community Link:

The PCL will centralize all parent collaboration. With the PCL, parents can volunteer their time and talents in a variety of ways without having to make year-long commitments. Parents can be involved in ways and at times that fit their schedules and level of interest. Whether you want to be planning regular events for the parent community or only have time for one hour at a major event on a weekend, the PCL will be your link to the school for volunteering.

The Parent Community Link’s objectives are to:

  • Provide opportunities for parent involvement such as with the PTA, Booster Club or informally through parent and community events
  • Build relationships with parents and ICS communities
  • Promote collaboration, communication and community involvement
  • Facilitate and support activities and special events to complement the academic program

How the PCL works

The PCL will be managed by the ICS Communications Office. The PCL will create a database of parents who want to be involved, with parameters outlining the dates, times and areas that each person would like to be involved. There will not be any officer positions or on-going executive roles in the PCL.

When an event needs extra support, the PCL will match parents with an event or project based on the interest that parents describe in the database. For larger events that need planning and execution, the PLC will go to the database and find parents that have indicated they would be interested in this level of commitment.

We are very excited about the PCL. We encourage all parents to take the survey and provide the parameters that fit your specific interests, needs and schedule. The survey should take only five minutes to complete. Then, when an opportunity comes up, we will contact you to see if you can be involved.

Health Office, Giving Thanks

On behalf of the Health Office at ICS and the Ethiopian National Blood Bank Services we would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to all who’ve joined us in our mission to save lives here in Addis and donate blood during our blood drive last Saturday 3 December. Your time and donations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all blood donors’ generosity, the Ethiopian National Blood Bank (ENBB) was able to collect 67 units of blood from 67 donors. Each blood donation can help save up to three lives. The collected blood units will be able to help 201 people in need.

We would also like to express our appreciation to the ICS administration for their support. Thank you to all performers for sharing their talents with us: Paula Hanson, Olani Selamu, Yali Ruff, Ariel Cahlon, Gaya Cahlon, Yewubdar Zeleke, Tesfaye, Dagmawit Anteneh, Medkdelawit Fissehazio and the local group of traditional dancers. Many thanks to Ato Senay and his crew for the efficient and wonderful set-up they did for the event.  Thanks also to the Booster Club for providing a free lunch for all ENBB staff. Thank you to all medical providers that helped make the Health Fair possible; Suisse Clinic, Nordic Medical Centre, Paragon Physiotherapy & Sport Medicine Specialized Higher Clinic, Vision Express Clinic, International Clinic Laboratories, Afei Diagnostic Centre, Robika Pharmacy, Old Airport Pharmacy,  Gojeb Specialized, Dental Clinic and Henok Massage Therapist. Last but not least, Thanks to the ICS nurses, the students - Jorgo Tesfa, Saron Fissa and Herma Demissie - and the crew of the ENBB for their coordination and the collection of blood. They worked tirelessly to make this blood-drive a success.

     

Thanks again to everyone who donated blood to help save lives. We truly appreciate your help; donating the gift of life is truly special.

Ski/Snow Boarding Trip (For MS and HS)

Dear Middle and High School Families,

There is a unique opportunity for your son/daughter to participate in a ski/snowboarding camp during the March week-long holiday (11 - 19 March 2017) in the Swiss Alps. Viamonde is an internationally known company that provides excellent ski/snowboarding instruction as well as evening fun activities. 

ICS Addis Activities Office helps organize this package which includes:

  • Airfare (to Geneva, Switzerland return)
  • all transportation to and from airports
  • all meals and snacks (fabulous Swiss food!)
  • equipment and ski-clothing rental
  • medical insurance
  • 6 full days of fantastic ski/snowboarding instruction
  • evening ‘off the mountain’ activities
  • dedicated, experienced and committed Viamonde camp counselors

Dawn Ashby and Alex Lancia, both experienced teachers and trip leaders at ICS, will be chaperoning the trip from ICS Addis to Switzerland, throughout the week, and back to ICS Addis.

Please note, Viamonde requires a minimum number of participants at each instructional level (ski or snowboarding) in order to offer their camps.

Reminder: Cafeteria News

Dear ICS Community,

Please take a few minutes to answer a few questions regarding our school cafeteria. Your participation and feedback will help us improve and maintain service quality. Thank you in advance for taking the time to participate in this survey questionnaire.  You can find the survey Here.

Reminder: Yearbook Photos

Our yearbook photos are now complete for this session. This year we had our in-house team take the photos and it was a huge success! Also this year, we will be giving away electronic copies of the photos at no cost. To collect your or your students' photos and class photos for elementary school students, please bring a flash drive or external hard drive to the school office. A staff member will then download copies onto your disk. Please use the elementary office for elementary students, middle school office for middle school students or high school office for high school students. You can collect photos from 17 November 2016 until 9 December 2016.

There will be a re-take opportunity for any missed photos in February.
