Planning for Your First Day at ICS Addis
Arriving in Ethiopia: while we do want your child to start school as soon as possible, it is important to give sufficient time to recover from jetlag! You are welcome to come visit the school with your child, to see the campus and to take care of any remaining formalities, before the child starts school. Please contact the Admissions Office via email or phone to set up an appointment.
First Day of School: Please keep us updated on your expected arrival date. On your child's first day of school, please arrive at ICS between 7:30 and 7:45 AM and come to the reception desk. We can then escort you and your child to class. Student in elementary school will need a snack. We will provide all new students with a lunch ticket on their first day of school and can assist you in buying lunch tickets for subsequent days, if you wish.
Please stay in touch with us and let us know when you will be arriving, so we can prepared for your arrival and can get your child into class as soon as possible.
Beginning of the New School Year
The first day of school for 2012-13 will be Tuesday 14 August 2012. There will be an orientation morning for all new students and parents on Monday 13 August 2012. More details will be available in the coming months.
To Do List Before First Day of School
Before Arriving in Addis
- Submit Medical Forms
- Submit Enrollment Agreement (obtain from Admissions Office)
- Purchase school supplies (2011-12 lists available: EC3-G2, G3-5, MS, HS; 2012-13 lists will be made available). There is no school uniform; however, for MS/HS students, please be aware of the dress code.
- For MS/HS students, submit all course requests to Admissions Office (see MS and HS sections below; 2012-13 information will be available soon).
After Arriving in Addis
- Submit Emergency Contact Form or provide one or more local contact numbers to the Admissions Office if the form cannot yet be fully completed
- Submit Parent ID Form (please print in color or pick up a hard copy from the reception desk)
- Obtain billing invoice
- For MS/HS students, purchase physical education (PE) uniform at school store
After Starting School
- Make tuition payment (generally due two weeks after student begins school)
- Obtain parent and household staff ID cards: Parent ID Form (please print in color or pick up a hard copy from the reception desk). Household staff must display their IDs at all times when on campus.
- Obtain a Vehicle Pass sticker for your vehicle if you wish to drive on campus
- Get a username and password to use the ICS wireless network; bring your laptop to the reception desk for configuration
- Get involved! Attend a PTA meeting, come to parent and student events, get to know your child's teachers.
2011-12 Tuition and Fees Schedule: Tuition and fees for the second semester are due on 27 January 2012, for students who begin on the first day of school. For student who start after the first day of school, fees are due two weeks after their first day.

ICS Transition Guide: The transition guide is intended to provide some advice and tips on how to handle moving to a new school and/or to a new country. You can also find some helpful advice on how to help your child handle moving from our elementary counselor here.
Welcome to Addis Guide: Compiled by ICS parents, this guide is an invaluable tool for those new to Addis Ababa as well as those already living in Ethiopia. The guide was updated in May 2011 and additions/corrections are welcome.
Questions, Answers and Announcements Ethiopia Listserv: This Google group was created by parents and others in the Addis community to serve as a forum for asking questions about expatriate living in Addis.
School Day:
- All students attend school Monday through Friday
- From 8:00 AM to 3:20 PM for kindergarten to grade 12 (kindergarten students have a flexible pickup from 2:50 to 3:20 PM)
- Wednesdays are always an early release day at 2:00 PM for students in kindergarten to grade 12
- Students in early childhood (EC3 and EC4) attend from 8:00 AM to 12 noon, Monday through Friday
Cafeteria: ICS has an on-campus cafeteria for students. Students may purchase lunch tickets for the days they wish to eat in the cafeteria. More information is available here.
ICS Weekly Newsletter: The Yezare Samint Newsletter is the primary method of communication between parents and the school. It is sent home once a week by email and is also available on our website.
ICS Magazine: The Zena Admas is produced twice a year and highlights events at ICS. The December 2011 edition is available here.
After School Activities Information: After school activities (ASAs) are available for students in grade 1 through grade 12 and include clubs, activities and athletics. Registration for ASAs is online, but new families who arrive in the middle of an ASA season are welcome to contact the Athletics and Activities Office directly to discuss their options. Season 1 ASAs started in early September with indoor activities, at the end of the rainy season, Season 2 starts in November and Season 3 starts in March. 1:1 Laptop Program: ICS has a 1:1 laptop program for students in grades 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11. The program extends to grades 8 and 12 in 2012-13. Click here for more information.
