Message from the Director 

Dear Prospective Parents and Students,

Thank you for considering to educate your children at the International Community School of Addis Ababa (ICS Addis). ICS Addis is sponsored by the US State Department and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. We offer a strong International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, recognized by colleges and universities worldwide.

Students and their learning are the central focus for our faculty and staff. We hire teachers with a strong student orientation, provide extensive training to keep our skills updated, and regularly take time to collaborate and talk about student learning. Student performance in reading, writing, science and math are all improving as a result. In our mission to provide a holistic, student-centered education, almost all of our students also participate in music, drama, art, sports and leadership activities. We share a culture of reflection and continuous, sustained improvement and we believe we can do this in a safe, caring and attractive environment in which high academic performance is expected. Evidence of this is the love of learning and reading that we see in almost all of our students, in the challenging courses our students elect to take, and the very high participation rate of students in our IB Diploma Program and in activities after school.

The families and faculty of ICS Addis represent over 60 nationalities, and all of us have our own experiences and visions of schooling. However, the school cannot be all things to all people. This is why the ICS school culture is so important to us…we must work together, deliberately, to create a common culture of high academic and behavioral expectations and achievement. We invite parents to support us and participate in our culture-building. Two tools that we use at ICS Addis to help us build this common culture are the ICS Way and the IB Learner Profile.

My role as the school’s leader for learning is to insist on quality teaching and to ensure that all students have access to a viable curriculum based on high standards of learning. If we achieve these two things we will be laying a strong foundation for our students’ futures. Please do not hesitate to let me know how we might do better.
