DEREK FERREIRA
Elementary School Counselor

Hi. My name is Derek Ferreira and I am in my 2nd year at ICS as the Elementary Counselor. My previous experience as an educator includes the roles of grade 3 and 4 classroom teacher, Special Education Resource Teacher, Guidance Counselor and grade 8 Social Studies teacher in the Toronto District School Board. I am excited to continue my work in Addis Ababa, the birthplace of my wife Yalem. My 6 year old son Stephen will be attending ICS this year in an Early Primary class.

All of my post-secondary education took place in Canada where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto and my Bachelor and Masters of Education at York University. I have specialist qualifications in Special Education and Guidance from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Recently, I received summer training on topics such as adventure in the classroom and engaging activities for social and emotional learning through Project Adventure workshops in the United States.

My hobbies and interests include reading, watching movies with family and friends and long distance running. I have completed Full Marathons in Ottawa and in New York City and numerous Half Marathons, 10K and 5K races. I look forward to my future training runs and races both inside and outside of Addis Ababa.
